Welcome runs from Wednesday 25 to Sunday 29 January 2012

Student Life and University of Salford Students' Union organise a wide range of events to help you settle in at Salford.

Win an Apple iPad courtesy of University of Salford Students' Union with our loyalty scheme.
Attend eight events to enter our prize draw. Collect a loyalty card at the Welcome to Salford event at 12.00noon on Wednesday 25 January or see us at the Welcome Information Point in University House. Get a stamp on your loyalty card when you attend qualifying events. Collect 8 stamps to be entered into our prize draw at the Welcome Meal on Friday 27 January 2012.

Members of International Society will be talking about how to get the most out of your time at Salford, living with the British and understanding the quirks of culture in the UK. Repeated on Friday at 4.00pm

Money Doctors: Managing your Money at University
Derwent Room, University House
Find out about good money management whilst you are in the UK and how to open a UK bank account. Learn essential tips and tricks from our team of Specialist Advisers.

4.00pm - 5.00pm
Why be Enterprising? Stand Out from the Crowd!
Derwent Room, University House
Your time at university should enable you to make the most of your career. 

Ever wanted to know what personal skills successful entrepreneurs have? 

Being enterprising means being proactive, creative, innovative, dynamic and focusing on implementation wherever you are and whatever you are doing, which could be within your own business, a company, academia, public sector, or within clubs and societies.  This session will get you thinking about these skills and how you can improve them.

Globe Café opens every Wednesday evening in the International Life Centre in University House. International students are welcome to drop in to enjoy games and a relaxed atmosphere. Meet new friends and hear about different aspects of British culture. And it’s free!

This event is for new international students. Learn how to build a UK style CV.  This will help you if you are looking for part-time work and if you apply for post-study work in the UK at the end of your course. If you already have a printed CV, bring it with you.

Getting started with University Learning
International Life Centre, University House
While starting at university opens up fantastic opportunities, students often worry about what to expect. You might be wondering things like:

  • Have I made the right decision?
  • What is a seminar?
  • What sort of assessments will I have, and how do I make a start on them?
  • How will I fit everything in?

This informal workshop will give you the chance to ask questions, discuss your worries and meet other new students. Repeated on Friday at 10.00am

Take a tour of the University with our Student Life Hosts.

11.00am - 12.00noon
University of Salford Community Action Teams and Salford Student Life Award
Derwent Room, University House

Find out how to achieve the Student Life Award and how to get involved in the University of Salford Community Action Team’s (USCATs) volunteering projects. Volunteering can provide a unique opportunity to find out about a chosen career and to stand out when applying for courses and jobs. It’s an ideal way to pick up experience of skills that employers look for, including communication, leadership, team-work and problem-solving and to establish contacts that could help you secure the job you want.

The Student Life Award is a great way to get involved in and be recognised for volunteering, to be part of an elite group of students and to go the extra mile during your time at University. The Award will help you to develop the necessary skills and abilities to succeed in the world of work after graduation, through volunteering and other extra-curricular activities. Repeated on Friday at 3.00pm

Library Induction

Come along to a Library induction for an overview of library and computing services.  The session lasts for about an hour and will include a presentation, demonstrations and some hands-on practice of key services including:

  • how to find the books on your reading list
  • how to look at e-journals
  • how to print out your work

Join Michelle and friends from Student Life for a fun packed event about life and culture in the UK.

Tickets £3
There is loads to do at this vast shopping and entertainment complex, including ten pin bowling, Laser Quest, or indoor golf. For a more relaxed evening you can browse at over 200 stores or dine in one of the 60 restaurants, bars and cafes.

Come along for a FREE evening meal and more! Meet some new people and don’t forget to fill in your personal details on the back of your loyalty card and enter it into the prize draw! You could win an Apple iPad courtesy of University of Salford Students’ Union.

7.30pm - 10.00pm
International Society Quiz
Bar Yours, University House
Always a highlight of Welcome at Salford, the International Society Quiz is an old favourite.  It’s always really good fun, a brilliant chance to meet other people and relax at the end of the week.

9.00am - 5.00pm Trip to Liverpool, Meet outside Maxwell Building
Tickets: £5.00 in advance from the Welcome Expo,
or visit the Welcome Information Point in University House.
Join us for a trip to the nearby City of Liverpool. Once a major seaport, this amazing city was known as the gateway to the world. The famous skyline features the elaborate Liver Buildings, the Albert Dock and not one, but two cathedrals completed in the Twentieth Century.  With its own distinctive accent, a rich and diverse culture awaits you. You will have the chance to visit some of the impressive collection of museums and art galleries, see the famous Matthew Street area and the Cavern Club, and lots more.

Take a guided tour around Manchester with a group of Student Life Hosts, who are also current students at the University.  Get first hand tips on where to go and what to do in Manchester, and let us know if there is somewhere you want to find!
